Disagreement without belief

چکیده
When theorising about disagreement, it is tempting to begin with a person's belief that p and ask what mental state one must have in order disagree it. This the wrong way go; paper argues people may also attitudes are not beliefs. It then examines whether several existing theories of disagreement can account for this phenomenon. its own normative theory gives best account, so, given there good reason believe without possible, think itself normative.

Disagreement, Dogmatism, and Belief Polarization
Consider the phenomenon of belief polarization. Suppose that two individuals—let’s call them ‘You’ and ‘I’--disagree about some non-straightforward matter of fact: say, about whether capital punishment tends to have a deterrent effect on the commission of murder. Although neither of us is certain of his or her view, I believe that capital punishment is a deterrent while You believe that it is n...
متن کاملQuantification of Attacks with and without Belief
Different techniques for expressing an amount of information on secrete data which can be obtained by a process observation are presented. They are based on information theory and they express certainty of sets of private actions which execution is guaranteed by a given observation and sets of actions which execution is excluded by a given observation. Moreover, the case when an intruder has sa...
متن کاملMultiple Iterated Belief Revision Without Independence
Multiple iterated revision needs advanced belief revision techniques beyond the classical AGM theory that are able to integrate several (propositional) pieces of new information into epistemic states. A crucial feature of this kind of revision is that the multiple pieces of information should be dealt with separately, which has usually been understood as requiring some kind of independence amon...
متن کاملA New Local Measure of Disagreement between Belief Functions - Application to Localization
In the theory of belief functions, the disagreement between sources is often measured in terms of conflict or dissimilarity. These measures are global to the sources, and provide few information about the origin of the disagreement. We propose in this paper a “finer” measure based on the decomposition of the global measure of conflict (or distance). It allows focusing the measure on some hypoth...
متن کاملPublic Disagreement∗
Members of different social groups often hold widely divergent public beliefs regarding the nature of the world in which they live. We develop a model that can accommodate such public disagreement, and use it to explore questions concerning the aggregation of distributed information and the consequences of social integration. The model involves heterogeneous priors, private information, and rep...
